A Wonderful Co-incidence

A Wonderful Co-incidence
Load shedding, Mobile and Burglary
friendship

- Dwarika Pd. Shrestha

Co-incidence:
The most unexpected and most unwanted load shedding that is in place these days in the capital and across the country as well day by day has made a wonderful co-incidence to develop its relation with cell-phone (mobile) and burglars. Load shedding, mobile and burglary have now become very much friendly and helpful to each other. The development of mutuality among the services of all these three factors have spoilt the valuable time of rest, sleep and comfortableness of the people and have lost even the confidence about the life security of their own. At the same time, it has developed lethargies among the workers or employees in the offices.

More was the duration of load shedding, the frequency of usage of cell-phone increased, accordingly made the burglars more busy.

Load Shedding:
Unlike in the past, the load shedding is very remarkable this time because it is being held continuously and extensively. There is load shedding, and load shedding in every morning, every evening and night. Load shedding starts in every winter here, because there will be no rain and cause drying of river and rivulets and weakening the force of water flow that help operate the turbine to generate electricity. The load shedding started this year since last couple of months from 18 hours a week. Nearly, three hours a day. The duration of load shedding was extended later to 24 hours a week - about 3 hours+ a day.

The notice of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) published about three weeks ago noticed that the load shedding was extended to 47 hours a week. Thus the electricity remained off for more than seven hours a day. Another latest notice published from the NEA on 18th December, 2008 said there will be no light for 70 hours a week or 10 hours a day. From the next month or two the power will be out for 18hours a day. And the situation of the power shortage will continue for five years more, it was further reported. So wakeup in the morning there was no light in the house. You take dinner in candle light, if it is possible for every day. And no light again in the evening so no way out but to rest and lie down.

The cell-phone:
The cell-phone is to convenient the busy person/s on talking and managing their business timely within a short time. Therefore, cell-phone was a good means in the present day of busy world. Nepal is a poor and under developed country. In other words, Nepalese people other than quite a few people of certain category like business men do not have any urgency or capacity of using the cell-phone. But it’s a wonder to see that each and every Tom, Dick and Harry seems using mobile phone every time and every where. That scene is seen in every thorough fare in the city. It looks that every three out of four pedestrians whether they be young or middle or old have carried a mobile of any trademark in his/her pocket or hand and keep on busy on talking. There are more than 30,00,000 mobiles on use, an unauthentic report said.

The special of mobile was that one cannot read the message received on it while there is sun light or the bright light against it. Of course, the mobile itself has got its provision to lit up the screen so that the consumers could read it out easily even at no light. Therefore, the mobile likes neither sun light nor any other bright light. You go to the dark corner or cover the screen with your palm against the bright light whenever it plays certain tone of receiving a message and read it.

Secondly, the mobile facilitates the consumer to talk with his/her party then and there as per their necessity. But due to error in network or battery bla, bla, it comes with lot of disturbances and talks can’t be held comfortably. The Telecommunication Authority knows it better. So, go little far from your friends or other while you need to talk in mobile phone with your party - might be a relative or other and share the information. This way, no light area and no man’s land is more preferable for the use of mobile phone. That is how the mobile maintains the secrecy of your talk and business and expedite the process fast.

The Burglars:
The burglars keep themselves busy at night because, many of the places are left lightlessness even when the load shedding schedules had not been introduced in the city. Thus the cell phone, and the load shedding have become like two blessings of the present day situation to them.

The burglary is the service that is undertaken at the odd time in an odd situation. Though, the burglars do their service sincerely in the dark and quite hour, they are frightened of the fact that the main stakeholder or other in periphery may know them and ask for help. The burglars, thus prefers no-light area and the odd and lone environment. It does not concern with any sort of legality, fair, justice and welfare of other. Its aim was to clean up of more and more valuable goods of other in the quiet, odd and inconvenient hours of other by entering quietly in others’ building or shop or workshop.

Since the load shedding took place many people in town have learnt to become very smart to take care of their own life and property. They can’t have a good sleep even at night. It is reported that the night watchers these days whether voluntarily or by service have seen the burglars running away with their mobile light at the dark night. It sounds as if every burglar has possessed a mobile each. Mobile is obviously an essential means to help their business.

Nepal is supposed as second richest country in water resources in the world. Water is the main source to generate hydro-power. So it’s very uneasy to say that the Nepalese people have to live in the dark. The Government in Nepal can’t maintain the continuous supply of electricity to the people in the country. So, God may be thankful if no one as Nepali from now on may pronounce that, ‘Nepal is the second richest country in the water resources in the world’.

Load shedding itself is not good one to be experienced. Otherwise, the commoner wouldn’t have paid a heavy amount of tax to the Government for the use of electricity. The Government argued that the load shedding was carried on to save the power to be supplied to the people or consumers in future.

Use of Appliences:
The winter season demands use of more electric appliances to keep the house warm. Thus the use of heaters, woven and other in the house was obvious. In the meantime, the development of Information Technologies caused maximum use of additional electronic appliances like computer, TV, radio, printer and the like. They have become a part of life. Load shedding in these days, offers you an odd scene in the market, when the seller sales the electric or electronic appliances from his/her shop in a candle light saying the heater or the bulb or the washing machine … is very good one and bla bla … .

The Bank:
A client went to a bank and asked the lady on the counter to check the balance. The lady on the counter in front of the computer said, “Sorry, there is no light. Come tomorrow, I’ll check immediately.” Because, there will be electricity tomorrow till 10:30 A. M. in the office hour. The updating of the voluminous ledger book/s was a system, the banks had followed previously all over the country. Since the computerization of updating the balance of assets and liabilities of the bank was developed the updating in the ledger books by writing has been almost eliminated. So the careless customer unluckily went to the bank with his passbook but in vain.

If the load shedding survives, will it help survive the lately opened banks equipped with latest electronic appliances?

The Rice Grinder:
The owner of rice grinder was taking a nap on his table under the bright sun at a side of his workshop. A consumer wakes him up and asked to grind the rice, he had taken with. The owner said, “ bring it tomorrow late evening, there is no load shedding after 5:30 p.m. tomorrow.”

The load shedding has caused many of the industries shut down in the Industrial Estates like Balaju Industrial Estates, Bhaktapur, Lalitpur, Hetauda, Janakpur, and Dharan Industrial Estates since last couple of months. Yet the concerned political leaders and the economists holding the authentic chairs have not been waked up. This is only tangible achievement the new Government has achieved in its 125 days so far.

Mid-Marshyangdi hydro power project:
However, Prime Minister Puspa Kamal Dahal Prachanda declared open a Mid-Marshyangdi Hydro-power project at Lamjung a few days ago. Inaugurating the mid-Marshyngdi project of 70 mega watt capacity, Prime Minister Prachanda said the main basis of new Nepal will be the production of hydro-power in the country. He also assured to initiate another mega Hydro-project at lower Karnali river in a collaboration with German Government. The mega project will have the capacity of producing 10800 mega watt. This way the Prime Minister also assured to solve the present power shortage problem within a couple of months on the occasion.

In the meantime, the print journals published today, the 26thDec. 2008 reported, “the Nepal Government has announced 12 hours loae-shedding daily from Monday. The reason: the energy deficit stands at 3.8 million units per day. The shortfall is pegged at a whooping 40 per cent. The sitation has aggravated following a yawning gap between demand and supply – a perennial problem around this time of the year when the snow-fed rivers run dry.

“The demand is growing by 10 per cent annually. If the situation does not improve by February, then there may be 16 hours of power cuts daily,” said Sher Singh Bhat, chief, load dispatch centre, Nepal Electricity Authority,” the Hindustan Times reported.

Last but not the least, the power outage has over taken all the big issues like street fighting among the different groups of youngsters patronized by two ruling left parties, ‘band’, traffic jam, ‘Chaka Jam’ and the like being organized since last few years. It has become ‘a big challenge’ to the security force of the State, the tall Minister of Home Affairs and of course, a big threat to the peace and security of all as well. Can it be hoped that the leader of the present Government could keep up their words of solving the power woes within the said time.
